Performance
Examples described here of the performance and application of
the kata are of the fundamental level. There are many ways of
performing the kata depending on the level of understanding and
emphasis of the teacher. What is important is that the kata is
taught with an understanding of the key martial principles that
the kata was intended to embody.
In
some instances attacking moves have been described as blocks.
This is because the physical movement is more commonly described
using terminology that defines a blocking action (and vice versa).
Start
Come to attention - mind concentrating, body poised , resolve
strong.
Bow - Acknowledge the moment
Place left hand over right, one fist distance in of front groin
area.
1st
opening sequence
The
opening sequence is repeated three times, this indicates the importance
of the principles being practiced and it also brings the student
back onto the same side of the original starting position.
(1) From the ready position. Form a fist with the right hand and
clasp the left around it. Extend the right arm out straight, with
the right hand in vertical fist position. Draw the arm back to
the right side of the chest, performing a rear elbow strike, using
the left hand to assist in driving driving back and down.
(2) Step forwards with the right foot, whilst turning the body
90o anti clockwise and draw the left foot to the right into a
V stance. Continue to clasp the hands together, simultaneously
striking with a right horizontal forward elbow strike whilst pulling
the left elbow into the side of the chest. The body is aligned
to the West.
(3) With the left foot, step back and down, into a square stance.
The left hand leaves the right fist and extends to the front (North)
executing a palm strike. Continue by pressing down with a left
palm heel block. As the left palm heel presses below the right
elbow, pull the left elbow back so that the left palm heel block
stops opposite but not touching the sternum, simultaneously drive
the right elbow out and up (between sternum and throat height).
Follow up with a right whippy backrest.
2nd opening sequence repeated on the right
(4) Form a fist with the left hand whilst opening the right hand.
Bring the right hand back to clasp the left fist and continue
to draw both hands back to the left side of the chest.
(5) In one continuos movement step with the rear (left) foot of
the square stance into a front stance (facing North); and then
to draw up the rear (right) foot of the Front Stance to the leading
foot whilst pivoting into a V stance to face East. During these
transitions continue to look ahead, i.e. to the north. Execute
a right rear elbow strike, driving the elbow back and down whilst
the left elbow comes around striking horizontally to the front
(East) using the left hand to assist in driving back and down.
(6) With the right foot, step back and down, into a square stance.
The right hand leaves the left fist and extends to the front (North)
executing a Palm Strike. Continue by pressing down with a right
Palm Heel Block. As the right palm heel presses below the left
elbow, pull the right elbow back so that the right Palm Heel Block
stops opposite but not touching the sternum, simultaneously drive
the left elbow out and up (between sternum and throat height).
Follow up with a left whippy back fist.
3rd opening sequence repeated on the left.
(7) Form a fist with the right hand whilst opening the left hand.
Bring the left hand back to clasp the right fist and continue
to draw both hands back to the right side of the chest.
(8) In one continuous movement step with the rear (right) foot
of the square stance into a front stance (facing North); and then
to draw the rear (left) foot of the Front Stance to the leading
foot whilst pivoting into a V stance to face West.
During
these transitions continue to look ahead, i.e. to the north.
Execute
a left rear elbow strike, driving the elbow back and down whilst
the right elbow comes around striking horizontally to the front
(West) using the right hand to assist in driving back and down.
(9) With the left foot, step back and down, into a square stance.
The left hand leaves the right fist and extends to the front (North)
executing a Palm Strike. Continue by pressing down with a left
Palm Heel Block. As the left palm heel presses below the right
elbow, pull the left elbow back so that the left Palm Heel Block
stops opposite but not touching the sternum, simultaneously drive
the right elbow out and up (between sternum and throat height).
Follow up with a right whippy back fist.

Open the right hand and then extend out both arms toward the corners
with the palms turned out.(NW and NE)

Step across to the left (West) with the left foot and then still
facing the front (North) draw the right foot to the left. Receive
with a simultaneous left wrist middle hooking block and a right
lower palm heel block. Kick with right front middle kick ensuring
that the knee is lifted higher than the hip.
5th sequence
(12) Bring the kicking leg back and the step across to the right
(East), once again extending both arms out toward the direction
of the front corners. Draw the left foot to the right. Receive
with a simultaneous right middle wrist hooking block and a left
lower palm heel block. Kick with left front middle kick ensuring
that the knee is lifted higher than the hip
6th sequence
(13) Step back with the left leg into a right Forward Stance.
Turn the right hand over into a right open handed posture and
perform a double open handed hooking block drawing the wrists
back to the side of the chest. Fold all the fingers, so extending
the fore knuckles and then strike with both hands along a curved
line using a scissors strike to the chest in a vertical line with
both nipples

Form a hammer fist with the right hand and an open palm with the
left. Following a half circle, bring both hands down to meet just
above the right knee hitting the little finger side of the hammer
fist into the left palm.
7th sequence
(15) Open the right hand and turn both hands over palm down into
a double open handed middle mountain block and turn, pivoting
on the back (left) leg through 180o to face behind (south) in
a left forwards stance.
(16) Receive with the left arm and perform a double open handed
hooking block drawing the wrists back to the side of the chest.
Fold all the fingers, so extending the fore knuckles and then
strike with both hands along a curved line using a scissors strike
to the chest in a vertical line with both nipples.
(17) Form a hammer fist with the left hand and an open palm with
the right.. Following a half circle, bring both hands down to
just above the left knee hitting the little finger side of the
hammer fist into the right palm.
Sequence

(18) Foot sweep with the rear leg (right), using the momentum
to pivot through 180o to face behind (South). Simultaneously bring
the right arm, still forming the hammer fist, over and around
the head. The left fist is drawn back to the side of the chest.
Place the right foot down in a right triangle stance whilst striking
down with a vertical middle level hammer fist.

Open the right hand and turn over, palm up. Press forwards then
turn back over forming a seizing hand. Pull the right hand back
to the side of the chest, palm down and with the left fist strike
out with a close punch at the height of the floating ribs. The
punch finishes with the elbow a fist away from the chest.
Sequence

(20) Foot sweep with the rear (left) leg of Triangle Stance and
pivot through 180o to face behind (South). Place the left foot
down in a left Triangle stance whilst striking down with a vertical
middle level hammer fist.

Open the left hand turning the hand over, palm up. Press forwards
then turn over forming a seizing hand. Pull the left hand back
to the side of the chest, palm down and with the right fist strike
out with a close punch at the height of the floating ribs. The
punch finishes with the elbow a fist away from the chest.

(22) Open the right hand and turn over, palm up. Press forwards
then turn back over forming a seizing hand. Pull the right hand
back to the side of the chest, palm up simultaneously striking
with a left middle punch.
Sequence

(23) Extend both arms out, palms facing out. Step with the left
leg forwards (South) and turn through 180o pulling the right foot
back and sink into a right Cat stance. Swing the left arm across
the chest block with a middle level palm heel block under the
right elbow, whilst the right arm pulls back into a middle level
open hand block, palm up.
(24) Draw left hand back to the side of the chest simultaneously
striking with a right middle level ridge hand/ elbow strike.
(25) Block and strike with a double round house/tiger mouth left
hand down, right hand up.
Finish
Place
right hand on top of left palm, lift both hands up turning over.
Press down left hand on top of right.
